On October 14th, 1926 A. A. Milne’s loveable Pooh bear entered the hearts of children worldwide with the publication of his first novel, Winnie-the-Pooh.
On this day 88 years ago we were first introduced to the lovable teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends Piglet, a small and anxious toy pig; Eeyore, a sarcastic and pessimistic toy donkey; Owl, a wise yet scatterbrained live owl; and Rabbit, an easily irritable live rabbit. The characters of Kanga, a motherly toy kangaroo, and her son the energetic Roo are introduced later in the book. The bouncy overconfident toy-tiger character of Tigger is introduced in the sequel, The House at Pooh Corner.
Inspired by the toys of his son Christopher Robin Milne, the original stuffed animals are on display in the Main Branch of the New York Public Library in New York City.
To celebrate the publication anniversary of Pooh, here are some of my favourite words of wisdom from the thoughtful teddy bear and his friends.“Just because an animal is large, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo.”
“Love is taking a few steps backward maybe even more…to give way to the happiness of the person you love.”
